Neustadt am Kulm
liegt am Rauhen Kulm, einem erlosche
nen Vulkan, welcher als Landmarke, Geotop und Natur-
denkmal den Nordbayerischen Raum prägt. Wegen der
Naturbelassenheit und seiner Popularität als Ausflugsziel
wurde der Rauhe Kulm zu Deutschlands Naturwunder
gewählt. Als weit sichtbare Landmarke hat der Rauhe Kulm
schon vor einigen tausend Jahren Siedler angezogen. Dies
belegen unzählige archäologische Funde, die bis in 6. Jahr-
tausend v. Chr. zu datieren sind. 1370 verlieh Kaiser Karl
IV. das Stadtrecht, was bis zum 18. Jahrhundert die Blüte-
zeit der Stadt auslöste. Neben einem markgräflichen Amt
war das Kastenamt, die übergeordnete Forstbehörde und
neben dem Gericht in Bayreuth die höchste Gerichtsbarkeit
der Region dort angesiedelt. Mit der Eingliederung in das
Bayerische Königreich 1803 verlor die Stadt leider an
Bedeutung. Nichtsdestotrotz wird die kleinste Stadt der
Oberpfalz im Jahr 2020 ihr 650-jähriges Stadtjubiläum
gebührend feiern. Eine weitere Besonderheit stellt der
Almabtrieb der Ziegen vom Kleinen Kulm dar. Am ersten
Oktobersonntag jeden Jahres werden die geschmückten
Ziegen in einem Festzug umrahmt von kulturellen Veran
staltungen talwärts begleitet.
Die Stadt, die hauptsächlich als Wohnsiedlungsgemeinde
und Pendlerort fungiert, hat einen überregional angese-
henen und beliebten Kindergarten. Die Grundschule ist im
Schulverband Rauher Kulm eingegliedert. Die wunder-
schöne Kirche, die einzigartige Lage sowie die Struktur des
Stadtkerns – eingebettet zwischen den beiden Kulmen –
machen Neustadt zu etwas ganz Besonderem.

Neustadt am Kulm
is situated at the western base of the
mountain, Rauher Kulm, an extinct volcano, which is not
only a landmark of Northern Bavaria but also a geotope
and natural monument. Thanks to its natural purity and its
popularity as a destination, the Rauher Kulm has been
selected as Germany’s natural wonder. Since it is visible for
many miles, Rauher Kulm has attracted settlers for several
thousand years. This is documented by innumerable archeo-
logical findings dating back to the 6th century BC. In 1370,
Emperor Charles IV granted the town charter to Neustadt
am Kulm, during which time the town thrived until the 18th
century. In addition to the margraves bureau, the bursary,
the superior forestry authority, and the highest jurisdiction
apart from the court in Bayreuth were located here. Because
of the incorporation into the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1803,
the town unfortunately became less important. Nevertheless,
the smallest town in Upper Palatinate will celebrate its
650th anniversary in 2020. Another feature is the return of
goats from the summer pastures on the mountain Kleiner
Kulm. Every year on the first Sunday in October, the ador-
ned goats are accompanied downhill by a procession fra-
med by cultural events.
The town, which is mainly a residential area and well-liked
with commuters, has a popular child care center, respected
also beyond the region. The elementary school belongs to
the associations of schools of Rauher Kulm. The beautiful
church, the unique location as well as the structure of the
town center – nestling between the two Kulm mountains –
make Neustadt very special.

turm besetzte grüne Bergkegel, dazwi-
schen unten eine eintürmige silberne
Kirche mit roten Dächern, über der ein
von Silber und Schwarz gevierter Schild
der Hohenzollern schwebt.
Städtepartnerschaften
Neustadt ist Mitglied der internationalen Städtefreund-
schaft „Neustadt in Europa“ mit 36 Städten und Gemein-
den, die den Namen Neustadt in Deutschland, Tsche-
chien, Polen, Ungarn, Österreich und der Slowakei
haben. Hinzu kommen Partnerschaften mit Lichtenau
(Sachsen) und Speichersdorf (Oberfranken).

Two green hilltops on gold ground with red crenellated
towers on the top. Nestled in the valley between the
towers is a silver church with a single tower and a red
roof. The escutcheon of the House of Hohenzollern with
silver and black squares hovers above.
Town Twinning
Neustadt is a member of the international town friend-
ship “Neustadt in Europe”, consisting of 36 towns and
municipalities in Germany, Czech Republic, Poland,
Hungary, Austria, and Slovakia named Neustadt.
Furthermore, Lichtenau (Saxony) and Speichersdorf
(Upper Franconia) are twin towns of Neustadt am Kulm.
